Elemental is the adjective form of the word element. In chemistry, it refers to matter composed of only one chemical element: graphite and diamond are both forms of elemental carbon.
The term "elemental state" is applied to elements that are usually found in combination with other elements such as metal oxides or ores: some copper is found in mines in the elemental state.
The adjective "metallic" is frequently used when the adjective "elemental" is more correct: "metallic sodium" is one in the same as "elemental sodium".
Elemental is a creature formed entirely of one of the classical elements in mysticism, alchemy, mythology and modern fantasy fiction.
